The Story Behind Our Organic Tea Soap – Kana Kare Luxury Wellness

Kana Kare’s First Product

Kana Kare started off as a skincare line of non-toxic, affordable, effective organic face & body soap. My sister Riva and I knew that we wanted to create products that supported and showcased some of the beauty and health customs practiced in Asia. And the most practiced, at the top of our list, was the overall wellness drink: Tea.

Tea is the basis of wellness and cure in Asia. Have a cold or fever? Ginger and lemon tea. Feeling exhausted? Green tea. Feeling anxious? Lavender and chamomile tea. One of the first remedies for any sickness in most Asian households is a hot drink, and most commonly that would be some sort of tea mixture.

The Research

When I first started my journey into Kana Kare’s product research, I relied very heavily on the experiences and home remedies of generations of mothers in different households. I interviewed and sat with many women, asked them about their beauty and health secrets and I zoned in on the key ingredients used by most.

Not surprisingly, I found that most Asian women tend to focus intently on the food they consume to compliment their skin care routine for an overall desirable beauty effect on their physique and skin. Tea was number one. Out of the countless women I talked with, most were happy to share with me their cabinet of beauty drink mixtures and selected beauty tea.

White Tea to help with pigmentation, Black Tea to detox from acne, Chamomile Tea to reduce inflammtion, Rooibos Tea to sooth, Green Tea for antioxidants, and Yerba Maté to energize.

To add onto that, I found that many Asian women also consumed collagen drinks, depended greatly on topical Kojic Acid for whitening skin, Malunggay & Coconut Oil for soothing inflamed skin, and crushed seeds, dried fruit and oatmeal for exfoliation.

From Concept to Creation

I took these home beauty remedies back with me and started working on formulations and combinations, with my sister, for the most effective soap blends we could create. We knew right from the beginning that we wanted to create soap bars that are good for the face and body. We wanted our products to be functional, practical and powerful.

After trial and testing for over 6 months, we finally perfected 6 different variants of vegetable glycerin based – tea blended soap bars, each having it’s own specific beautification purpose. All of our soap bars are non toxic and FREE of Parabens, Synthetic Fragrance, and Tetrasodium. Safe for pregnant ladies and children!

Our 5th, but not yet final, home

My husband and I have enjoyed 4 homes together in the last 7 years. That might sound like a lot but being an expat who is now living on the other side of globe, I’ve come to miss certain things that I had in my home when I was growing up in the states. (Not that I at all miss the States). Living in a city as dense as Manila, it has been hard for me to accept certain living customs, but I love Asia and it has become my personal mission to find a home for my family that meets all of my criteria…
